This year, Namex’s summer is more Mediterranean than ever.
That is not just a turn of phrase. Over recent months the Mediterranean has become the thread running through many of the initiatives we are pursuing, and it stands out ever more clearly as one of the strategic directions along which we imagine the future of our consortium.
The success of NAM2026, which brought together almost a thousand participants — operators, companies, institutions and industry professionals — was the clearest demonstration of this. Not only because of the result itself, but because it confirmed once again the strength of the Namex community: a network of people who, every day, help build a more open, efficient and resilient internet.
For more than thirty years we have believed that cooperation between operators, neutrality and the sharing of expertise is the best way to help the internet grow. Today, in an international context marked by profound technological and geopolitical change, that conviction is more relevant than ever.
The Mediterranean is returning to the center of the internet’s geography. New submarine cables, data centers, digital infrastructure and new traffic flows are turning the region into one of the most dynamic parts of the global internet ecosystem.
It is against this backdrop that Namex’s own journey takes shape.
While our successful collaboration in Albania continues, in recent months we have launched new initiatives in Libya and Lebanon. At the same time we are working with KOSIX in Kosovo, with North Macedonia’s internet exchange point (MKIX) and with TOP-IX, within the Argo alliance.
These are not standalone initiatives but the first steps in a broader vision: to encourage a cooperation network among the internet exchange points of the Mediterranean, pooling skills, experience, services and best practices.
We hope that in the coming years other internet exchange points will join us. We are convinced that closer collaboration between IXPs can contribute not only to the network’s technical development but also to greater mutual trust, more resilient infrastructure and the digital sovereignty of the entire Mediterranean basin.
In truth, that vision was already contained in our name. NAutilus MEditerranean eXchange is more than the acronym from which Namex was born. When the name was chosen, in 2001, the Mediterranean was above all an intuition. Today that same intuition has become a concrete strategy, built on relationships, cooperation and trust between communities that share the same values.
After the summer break we will carry on consolidating what we have built, developing new services and further strengthening Namex’s role as one of Italy’s leading internet exchange points — without losing sight of what has guided us for more than thirty years: neutrality, independence, community spirit and attention to the needs of our members.
Summer is a good time to recharge, but also to look ahead. We are doing so with the enthusiasm of people who know they can count on an extraordinary community, and with the conviction that the Mediterranean is one of the most important growth opportunities for the internet in the years to come.
