Vitalbanet is a WISP active in Southern Italy, mainly in the northern part of the Basilicata region. We spoke with one of its founders, Salvatore Lorusso:
“Our network was born in 2005. In that period in our area there was no high-quality connection and when ADSL started arriving in nearby areas we started looking for a way to be able to provide this connectivity also in our cities in the north of the region.
We opted for radio connections since there was no cabled infrastructure. Since the beginning, we realized that there was a huge demand for connectivity and the service worked excellently. Even today, in areas such as our region, the cable networks are lacking in reaching the whole population, hence it is crucial to have technology such as wireless connectivity.
There is always a point that I like to remember; when we went to the ministry to start our activity, they told us that we were among the first 5 in Italy to start such an experiment. Today we are proud to say that we really know this technology since its foundations in Italy.”
Why connecting at Namex?
“We joined Namex because we think it is the natural evolution of a provider like us. We have about 2000 users, but we are growing constantly. The landing at Namex will help us to support wired networks, in addition to the radio service (Northern Basilicata, about twenty municipalities and also in the neighbouring regions – prov. of Avellino and in the central part of Puglia – provinces of Bari and Foggia). In fact, we are starting to support wired networks, with the coverage of the optical fiber service, thanks to the work of Open Fiber which is deploying the connections in the so-called white areas.”
