ITNOG on the Road

What is ITNOG on the road
The “ITNOG on the road” is a series of roaming events with the aim to promote the growth of the Italian Internet community. The purpose is that of being present in many different locations to foster the encounters with the companies that offer Internet services in the entire Italian territory and to promote and encourage tighter cooperation among the network operators.

The first “on the road” event has been organized in Rome on July 10th, 2018 by NaMeX with attendance from almost 30 people, receiving very positive feedback; the following event took place in Torino and the last one so far was held in Pescara.

All events organized by NaMeX under the name of “ITNOG on the road” enjoy the endorsement of ITNOG – Italian Network Operators Group.
Every ITNOG on the road is held in a new city, with the intention to learn every time the specifics of the local community and to help the networking among small and medium ISPs that operate in the surrounding area.

How does it work
ITNOG on the road starts in the afternoon with a training class. The target audience should have a technical background and willing to learn more on the Italian IXPs. The aim of the training session is to introduce and discuss the main and hottest topics that are related to the IXP world, like the BGP protocol and the interconnect options, with both a theoretical and a practical approach.

At the end of the workshop, a social event like a dinner or an aperitif is organized to help people socialize and interact.

Why do we do it
ITNOG on the road connects people to interconnect networks. Italy is full of small and medium providers that reach operational excellence in their territory, serving the most remote and underdeveloped areas that lack an Internet infrastructure. NaMeX wants to promote an aggregation that is key for the development and the improvement of the Italian network. A growth path that cannot but be based on stricter cooperation among the telecom operators, both on the technical side but especially on the human interaction front. NaMeX is proud to offer its contribution to make it happen.

The fifth round of ITNOG on the road took place in Bari, 03 July 2019.

We were guests at the Hotel Palace, proposing a once again renewed program, with seven different speakers on the stage during the workshop.

  • Our general manager, Maurizio Goretti, introduced the initiative
  • Alessandro Galardini, from the TOP-IX consortium, made a brief introductory presentation on peering and the world of Internet eXchange Points
  • The introduction to the BGP protocol was carried out by Antonio Prado (SBTAP), with a particular focus on the good safety practices of the MANRS initiative
  • Just before the coffee break, our CIO, Flavio Luciani, conducted a small verification quiz on the basic concepts of BGP
  • Michele Rizzo presented the case of WicitY studies
  • Marco Paesani (Fiber Telecom) made a presentation on RPKI, another fundamental security framework for IXPs
  • Paolo Lucente (NTT) finally concluded the workshop with an intervention on the BGP Monitoring Protocol

Naples, 27th March 2019

The fourth round of ITNOG on the road was held in Naples, March 27th 2019.

Thanks to the University of Naples Federico II and to prof. Antonio Pescapè, we brought the event to the Historical Library of the Faculty of Engineering. For this event, we worked together with our buddies of TOP-IX. We proposed an expanded and updated program, following what we did in the three previous events.

Here is a short report of the event:

  • Our CIO, Flavio Luciani introduced the initiative
  • Alessandro Galardini, from TOP-IX, gave an introductory presentation about the Internet Exchange Points, explaining the benefits of peering
  • Angela Dall’Ara, from RIPE NCC, gave a detailed presentation on the various services offered by RIPE
  • Alfredo Giordano, CEO of Warian, presented a case study concerning his company entitled “BGP4startup – basic security practices”, with a focus on DDoS mitigation.
  • Finally, Tiziano Tofoni gave an introductory lecture on the BGP protocol, a topic that has become traditional during the ITNOG on the road events organized by NaMeX

The evening ended in the historical Pizzeria Cafasso, with the usual ITNOG on the road social session, that is useful for speakers and participants to expand their personal network in the community, benefiting from an informal and relaxed atmosphere.

Rome 10th July 2018

The first ITNOG on the road took place in Rome, with an introductive workshop on BGP protocol hold by our Chief Innovation Officer, Flavio Luciani. We had almost 30 attendees, coming from local providers, receiving great enthusiasm, especially during the applicative set.

After the BGP workshop, the attendees were invited to take a brief tour of our datacenter, and then we moved for the social sessions at “Ex Dogana“, a fascinating urban space that used to be a customs checkpoint.
