It’s been said more or less for 2000 years:
“All roads lead to Rome”.
It looks like this old adage will also come true for the roads of the Internet! Yes, it was a really great year for NaMeX. Most of what we wanted to achieve became reality.
Rome has firmed up as a key Italian and international interconnection point, notably as a meeting point between OTTs and Italian eyeballs, covering the central and southern regions of our country.
After the Netflix arrival in 2017, the activation of the Facebook Roman POP in 2018 confirms this trend. Furthermore, we welcomed other international players like Telia Carrier and China Telecom, along with 13 new Italian ISPs, increasing our members by 21% over the previous year.
We’re going to keep pushing in this direction, contributing to the continuous growth of Rome’s Internet.
We’ll persevere always bearing in mind our two pillars:
- being a member-based consortium, working to benefit all its members
- being a not for profit consortium, keeping investing all our profits to enhance our services
In 2018 we increased our turnover, for the first time topping 2M euro on services, up 15% compared to the previous year. A series of initiatives were carried out against the backdrop of this growth. First of all, we lowered the fees of many services, starting with peering, whose traffic went up 55% in 2018, closing in part the gap between NaMeX and the big international IXPs.
Moreover, we consolidated our Rome metropolitan colocation offer, expanding and beefing up the Caesar/Cineca Datacenter, as well as qualifying Tiberius/Interxion and Augustus/Unidata, interconnected with dark fiber paths.
We put a lot of effort into creating opportunities both for existing members to get together and to draw new ISPs into NaMeX:
The NaMeX Annual Meeting has become a can’t miss event in the ISP world, both for the number of attendees ‒ more than 220 attended the last edition ‒ and for the chance to meet head-on with other ISPs, benefiting from our One-to-One meeting formula.
The NaMeX Academy once again put together 30 top Italian experts to discuss a newsworthy topic behind closed doors: this time we discussed SDN, with the support of experts of international standing and chief engineers from Italy’s top ISPs.
“ITNOG on The Road”, the surprise of 2018, organized in collaboration with ITNOG and TOP-IX, enables NaMeX to attract new Italian ISPs. Through half-day BGP Interconnection workshops, paired with social meetups, dinners, aperitifs, NaMeX has met a good number of Italian ISPs during the editions organized in 2018 in Rome, Turin and Pescara.
In December 2018, the Consortium held an Extraordinary Meeting in which a new charter was approved, replacing the old one dated 2001, providing a charter more in tune with today’s needs. The Consortium’s framework is readier than ever to face future challenges, while the new year looks to be another positive one for NaMeX.
