NaMeX provides its members some additional services:
Root Name Server
he Root Name Servers are key players in the DNS (Domain Name System), the system which allows all Internet users to surf and send e-mail.
Only 13 global Root Name Servers exist across the globe. Their names go from a.root-servers.net to m.root-servers.net. Two of these are physically in Europe: one is in Great Britain, the other in Sweden.
The advantages for NaMeX's member ISPs are clear: the response times for Root Name Server queries have been drastically reduced, and the access to the Root Server system is now much more secure.
Thanks to partnerships with Internet Systems Consortium (ISC) and Verisign, NaMeX is currently hosting anycast instances of f.root-servers.net and j.root-servers.net.
Moreover, the presence of Verisign RIRS (Regional Internet Resolution Site), provides NaMeX members with DNS resolution for .net e .com TLDs.
Route Server
A route server is a tool that supports peering, allowing a simplification in the management of multiple BGP sessions. By means of a single session with the route server, it is possible to receive all routes announced by members connected to it. Route servers perform initial filtering of route received in order to guarantee their validity.
Route server enable new members to optimize their presence at NaMeX since day one, since they can start exchanging traffic with other members by establishing a single BGP session with the route server. At the same time, route server provides all members with the possibility of minimizing the effort in configuring multiple peering sessions and/or setting up a global backup session for normal multilateral sessions.
AS112
AS112 is an Autonomous System which uses anycast addresses techniques to provide authoritative DNS server for all zones corresponding to private IP adresses defined in RFC1918, that is:
- 10.0.0.0/8
- 172.16.0.0/12
- 169.254.0.0/16
- 192.168.0.0/16
Having an AS112 system near our exchange point reduces the possibility that DNS queries for private IP addresses (usually generated by misconfigured or badly coded software, or by malicious applications) can propagate trough the Internet. Further information can be found here.
iBGPlay
NaMeX offers its members the iBGPlay service, a professional inter-domain routing analysis tool, developed by the Dipartimento di Informatica e Automazione, Università degli Studi Roma Tre.
iBGPlay is an evolution of the BGPlay application available at RIPE, it is specifically designed to support ISP needs.
Using iBGPlay, providers are able to monitor their BGP activity and to visualize routing paths towards any network destination of interest. This analysis can be performed either in real-time or by means of historical data. Thanks to these features, iBGPlay can be regarded as a powerful diagnostic and troubleshooting tool.
You can try iBGPlay on the routing data collected from a NaMeX router (ASN 24796).
Out-of-band access
A Console Server has been installed at NaMeX. This gives the possibility to all Members to have out-of-band access to the serial port of their devices when the normal means of access are unavailable.
